The fall before the rise . . .

July 08, 2015

Members of the Vernon Habitat for Humanity action committee were busy last winter as they always are, raising funds, going through the hoops of land purchasing, consulting with contractors and architects, peeling back the red tape of regulations and permitting. And all the while the old home on the corner of 37th street and 25th avenue in Vernon’s east hill neighborhood stood dark and resolute.

In early summer that all changed. A crowd of volunteers armed with chain saws and axes descended on the lot and, when they left eight or ten hours later, the property had been stripped of the underbrush and weeds that had sprung up everywhere.

Then this fall the heavy machinery owned by Postill Nixon Earthworks of Vernon was brought in. In one morning the old house and a couple of out buildings were flattened and removed. The property now awaits the availability of men and materials, with ground breaking for the new three-plex that will rise out of the ground there planned for early spring. In the meantime selection committee members are assessing applications and conducting interviews with families to determine who will qualify for Habitat’s no down payment, no interest mortgage. Habit for Humanity, Building Homes, Building Hope.

Habitat For Humanity New Construction

On a sweltering July day this group, thirteen in all and all Kal Tire employees, descended on the Habitat for Humanity site on the east hill to lend a hand in cleaning up the property where Habitant will soon construct a new three-plex. The committee would like to thank these folks and Kal Tire for their wonderful support.
